Yellow applique quilt

 Just because blogging gives me an opportunity for lots of pictures (and words) to show you, I decided to post again after quite a while. I kind of missed, I hope you to!

 It took me long before this yellow quilt was finally finished...but last week I did!!!

These are the initials of 2 of my dogs who are no longer with us, but always give us so many good memories! Both, Goofie and Buffy, were wired hair dachshunds.

 A squirrel on the left

 and one on the right, made out of fabric with aboriginal prints.

 My first attempt of broderie perse with this stitch (I did it before here but used a herringbone stitch making the letter A and the geranium in the other quilt) I just gave it a go and use whatever I had in my drawers.

 lots of little stitches, but fun to do.

 This shape doesn't have 6 or 8 pieces but 7! Strange isn't it?

 A little detail of the border fabric. It is a heavier fabric compared to the rest of the fabrics.  I bought this as an old piece of curtain at an antique market, long before I even started this quilt.

I loved making all the applique, yo-yo's, mini hexagons and broderie persé!!!
Margaret Sampson-George helped me pick the yellow background, which I love! I already had a lot of appliqué and EPP shapes lying around, but after attending one of her workshops it came all together in one quilt.

More 'Foep'

Over the last days I made some progress on my 'Foep' quilt .

Some of the fabric choices, guarded by one of my early home made Teddies. Some fabrics are quite new, others were in my drawers for decades like the brown one with the orange, yellow and white flowers. Some are quilt fabrics, while some were old cloths like the brown eyelet fabric. There are also men shirts, old sheets and the middle  quilt part background fabric in light blue, is from a doll bed curtain.

To make the 'Foep quilt' I need lots of lace. I already had some for years and years in baskets and boxes.

This is band (cord?) for upholstery I presume. It is French and old. 

 It was the right colour for me.

The quilting I do is simple. I use Valdani thread and make rather big stitches. I make the quilt in a 'quilt as you go' way.

I make all the appliqué birds and eggs by machine and  they need fusible web (already cut out here, on my big Teddy bear's legs) before I iron them on. After that, they are stitched down with a blanket stitch.

Some of the birds and eggs have batting in them to make them more alive.

This is what  I've done so far. I'm enjoying the whole process of making, machine sewing, hand sewing the lace, embroidering and choosing colours.

All my 1718 blocks assembled, top is ready!

This weekend I finished sewing my '1718 coverlet replica top'. I was very excited, happy and at the same time a bit melancholic that this was over. It sounds strange but sometimes I'm happy when a project is finished and another time it feels a bit sad to end 'a journey'. 

Last week I was busy finishing the last blocks, like these rabbits and geese.

Now it is time to finish it. I wanted to make a coverlet as is the original one. The thing is I used so many different fabrics as linen, upholstery, old trousers (slacks) en skirts, Japanese woven fabrics, 50 % linen/50% silk, hand dyed fabrics by my friend Teri and many linen and scraps by Margret Behrends-Kohl , shot cottons, an antique striped sheet. All these differnt fabrics made the top heavy and vary in thickness. I don't want to leave it unquilted. This week I hope to find a backing fabric and make a quilt sandwich. To be continued!

a Lion, a Unicorn, Deer and Chicken

Here are some new blocks for my 1718 coverlet reproduction. I used all kind of fabrics like wool, linen, cotton, silk/linen combination and different ways of appliqué.

This is the unicorn close up. Lots of blocks are made in pairs but this one is on its own. Like the lion in the previous photo, this animal is appliqued with a herringbone stitch.

 I used this stitch before as you can see in this photo above and wrote about it here.

This means that I have two more rows of blocks finished and can start sewing those two rows together. Hope to finish that soon. Lots of appliqué left to do, but I'm getting there!
