African quilt finished!

My African quilt is finished! The pattern is from a book by Kathy Doughty called "Making quilts...The promise of joy"   

Here I unfolded the quilt in front of the Cruquius museum ( with the biggest steam engine in the world, used for emptying the Haarlemmermeer lake around1852)

Like this butterfly in the grass near my feet,who is just unfolding his wings I think, he couldn't fly yet. The crinkles are still visible.

All African fabrics are bought at the Tambani stand in Rijswijk quiltshow ( Dutch blog: here ) They sell embroidered panels but at that stand, African fabrics too!

I combined the African fabrics with lots of different fabrics of my closet, like the thrift shop shirts I bought in the USA....

 Shirtings...new modern fabrics....reproduction fabrics....

 linen fabrics, old and new.

 

 The back is a combination from leftover fabrics and a big piece with checks my aunt gave me long time ago.

The quilting is done by my on my Pfaff Expression 4.0 . I used a thick thread( which I had for years but there is n name on it) at the top and Invisafil thread from Wonderfil in the bobbin.

Some African fabrics are really bright, like the yellow and orange butterflies.The patterns so different from the ones we are used to.  All of them were reversible, almost no difference between back and front of the fabrics.

The  best way to see the pattern is from a distance. It is perhaps not a beautiful quilt but just  practical and a fun quilt. It has already been washed and dried, feels good and smells nice!!!

Stripey blanket, Hexagon panel quilt and new book.

 Een nieuw werkje en superleuk om te doen. Ik ben niet de enige heb ik ontdekt, die hieraan begon! Ik hoor van andere dat ze ook met streepjes haken. Kijk hier komen de kleuren die ik koos:

I just started this new crochet blanket. I'm not the only one who is working on this! Lots of people are working on it. Here are my colours I chose:

De deken zag ik op pinterest en het patroon vond ik  hier op het weblog van Hannah,  South Carolina, USA (in het Amerikaans) .  Hannah verteld in een stukje dat zij haar inspiratie weer haalde van Jules  in Australië.  Ook is een vertaling van het patroon in het Nederlands te vinden op de site van Terray hier , alleen krijg je dan iedere week een paar toeren van het patroon, dus daar staat nog niet alles op.

I first saw the blanket on pinterest and found the pattern here on Hannah's weblog (South Carolina, USA). Hannah wrote that she found the inspiration for this here on Jules's weblog in AUS. You can also find a translation in Dutch at Terray's weblog, here but it is not the whole pattern yet, she gives one part each week.

De bolletjes acryl komen van de haakwinkel in Alphen aan de Rijn. Het is zacht en makkelijk om mee te werken. Ik haak op naalden 4 en 4,5 als het om steken gaan die een strakker resultaat geven. Leuke winkel met een grote sortering garen en aardige mensen. Hun website is ook erg mooi en duidelijk.

I bought the yarn here at a crochet shop in Alphen aan de Rijn. It is soft and easy to work with. I use a number 4 needle (sometimes 4,5 when the special stitches give a to tight result). It is a nice shop and they have a good website and service.

Dit is een nieuwe hexagon panel top aan het worden. Ik vind het leuk om met hexagons en de Engelse paper piecing methode te werken maar dat was misschien al duidelijk want misschien zag je al dat ik er al meer mee maakte. Morgen maak ik wat meer foto's van de panelen die al klaar zijn. Het patroon en idee komt van het boek 'Feathering the nest' van Brigitte Giblin.

This is the start of a new hexagon panel top. The pattern is from Brigitte Giblin's book: Feathering the nest. I used this method (Enlish paper piecing) before and I like working this way. I hope to make more photo's tomorrow from the panels that I already have.
