Today I made the final stitches of my Patchwork of the Crosses. The inspiration came from a Lucy Boston's
Patchwork. A stange feeling when this was finally finished but I'm very happy with the result. It fits well on my round breakfast table.
Even with the chairs it fits nice. As you probably can see it remained a patchwork, so I didn't quilt it. (like the on Lucy made). I was already quilting but than I didn't like it. I did not want to quilt riight through the crosses and only around the crosses seemed weird. After a few weeks of looking and thinking it over, I made my decision: I unpicked the quilting stitches and took of the batting (witch was easy because I basted it with a basting spray). After ironing the top I put it down on the backing fabric.
It fits exactly on the backing fabric. I finished it off with a so called edge-to-edge finish. It is a bit of a slow job but I like this kind of finish.
In the middle of the back sits the only leftover block which is also the label. The fabric under the label is full of roses. I had this fabric for a long time and now it seemed suitable. I like roses and this summer when I visited Lucy Boston's home and garden in Hemingford Grey, England, I learned she also liked roses a lot. So it was a easy choice. All the other fabrics came from my stash.
This is the edge. Some hexagons are cut off and others are appliqued on the brown fabric.
Unexpectedly the whole patchwork turned out to be quite firm and I was a bit afraid it would be vulnerable but it isn't. The front doen't shift from the back either (until now).
On the other hand it is not so surprising because all the patchworks made using the English paper method in the old days, were not quilted and did not have batting. Neither are the Patchworks of Lucy. Bridgitte Giblin, an Australian quilter who works a lot with this method does not use batting and doesn't quilt those patchworks.
