Love Entwined 1790 Mariage Coverlet (1) start

This is my first post about Esther Aliu's Free historic BOM. I am as far as the first picture shows. I hope to catch up a little. I joined the Yahoo group early but started late. This week I jumped into the project. I'm using my stash of Japanese fabrics. Probably a little bit unusual for the project but as you can see in the picture the colours do fit in our living room. I had to buy a bit more fabric for example for the background and some fat quarters in blue and green.

About making the first ring from the fabric with the stars:
After making the compass ( with a paperpiecing method) I placed it on top (face down) of the stars fabric and pinned the compass in place. I basted the compass to the fabric, with my featherweight (biggest stitch length).

This is how the front looked.

I cut away the fabric in the middle leaving a bit of a seam allowence. After that I used my seam ripper to cut  away a piece of the seam. Not too much at a time.

That is how I appliqued the stars fabric on the compass It was a good method to make sure all the points of the compass stayed visible.
.
De sterretjes lap zit vast.

The stars fabric is done.

I measured the compass and the ring on the pattern and made a cardboard template with my pair of compasses.Than the template in the middle of the compass and ironed the fabric to the back.

Daarna vast geappliceerd op de grote lap.

This is the result after appliqueing the circle on the background fabric.

On the pattern are little circles on the ring but it seems to me to busy on the stars. I can decide later to make them or not.

The top once more with the Japanese woven fabrics around the compass. They are not the easiest fabrics to work with but I did not give up ;) To the next bit. It is a big project but I like the idea of making one part every month like homework, nice homework in this case!

The weather is beautiful here and it will be very warm in the coming week. I don't like t be in the hot sun but working on this top in the shade would be nice.

Have a nice weekend,

Fijn weekend,
Groetjes
Annemieke
